One Piece Episode 1 Review: Meeting Luffy

Spoiler Warning: This review contains spoilers for Episode 1 of One Piece.

⚓ First Impressions

I just finished watching the very first episode of One Piece, and I can already tell this is going to be one wild adventure. The episode wastes no time throwing us straight into the world of pirates, treasure, and dreams. Even though it’s over 20 years old, the energy and charm are still fresh.

🏴‍☠️ Quick Recap

The story opens with the infamous pirate Shanks and his crew hanging around Foosha Village, where we meet a kid named Monkey D. Luffy. Right away, Luffy stands out—he’s loud, stubborn, and obsessed with becoming a pirate himself.

Things take a turn when we learn Luffy has eaten the Gum-Gum Fruit, a mysterious “Devil Fruit” that gives him rubber powers at the cost of never being able to swim. His first real moment comes when bandits threaten the village and his new idol, Shanks, saves him. It’s here we see two big themes start forming: courage and loyalty.

The most emotional part for me? Shanks losing his arm while saving Luffy from the Sea King. That scene instantly showed the depth of his bond with Luffy. Before leaving, Shanks gives Luffy his straw hat—the hat that will become a symbol of Luffy’s dream to be the King of the Pirates.

🤔 My Thoughts

  • Luffy as a character: He’s chaotic, a little reckless, but incredibly determined. Even as a kid, his belief in becoming King of the Pirates feels unshakable. I like that his dream isn’t about greed but about freedom and adventure.
  • Shanks’ role: In just one episode, he left a huge impact. Calm, confident, and willing to sacrifice everything for his crew and friends. Honestly, he already feels legendary.
  • Tone of the show: It’s got that mix of goofy humor (Luffy stabbing his face just to prove he’s tough—what? 😂) and serious, emotional weight. That balance feels like it’s going to be a big part of the series.
  • Animation/Style: Even though the art is older, it has charm. The music adds a sense of adventure too—it almost feels like a Saturday morning cartoon mixed with epic storytelling.

🌊 Final Thoughts

For a first episode, this hooked me. It gave me just enough world-building (Devil Fruits, the pirate era, Shanks’ influence) while still keeping the spotlight on Luffy’s beginnings.

I’m already curious: How will Luffy build his crew? What challenges will he face before reaching the Grand Line?

If the rest of the series keeps this mix of humor, heart, and high-stakes action, I can see why One Piece has been beloved for decades.

Rating for Episode 1: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4.5/5)
A strong start that balances lighthearted fun with emotional depth.

👉 Next up: Episode 2 — where we finally see Luffy set out to sea on his journey to become the King of the Pirates. Can’t wait.
